Queen of Soul
(Inspired by the legacy of Aretha Franklin)
Queen of Soul is a mixed-media tribute celebrating the power, beauty, and cultural legacy of soul music and Black womanhood. The piece was inspired by a spontaneous, deeply personal moment—encountering a woman selling 45-rpm vinyl records right in my neighborhood. After purchasing a few records and returning home, the vision came to me instantly. I went back to buy more, knowing these records carried stories that needed to live on in another form.
Growing up, I was surrounded by the sounds of 1960s–1980s soul music through my parents, and Soul Train was one of my favorite shows as a child. That music shaped my identity, my rhythm, and my creativity. This artwork honors that era and the women who embodied strength, freedom, and soul—just like Aretha Franklin, forever known as the Queen of Soul.
